ABSTRACT
Recent research has revealed alarming evidence that college students are experiencing high levels of stress, which correlates to high burnout rates and is linked to numerous undesirable outcomes. The present study examined the possible variable that mediates the relationship between student-perceived stress and school burnout. Specifically, this paper identified the level of perceived stress, stress mindset, self-connection, and personal and school burnout among college students, and determined if stress mindset and self-connection mediated the relationship between perceived stress and school burnout. The paper surveyed Central Luzon State University undergraduate students during the First Semester of AY 2021-2022. Stratified sampling was used in the selection of the respondents with ages ranging from 18 to 20 years old. Initial findings suggest that students’ perceived stress level is moderate and they experience high levels of personal and school burnout. Lower scores on stress mindset were also seen in the result, which indicates that students have a stress-debilitating mindset, and thus view stress and its effect negatively. Results also show that they have a slightly high self-connection. Additionally, the findings from the parallel mediation analysis indicated that perceived stress is directly related to school burnout through its relationship with a stress mindset. In contrast, the findings suggest that self-connection is not a significant mediator of the effect of perceived stress on school burnout. Nonetheless, the results suggest that students may overcome stress by developing an adaptive view of stress and encouraging them to be connected to themselves, thus, in the process, lessening the probable occurrence of burnout.

Department of Filipino
Central Luzon State University

and Charizza Vianca L. Libunao

Central Luzon State University

ABSTRACT

This describes the sentiments of students in various General Education courses delivered through online distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of 1, 356 students participated in an online survey at a state university in the Philippines. The keyword analysis using a word cloud generator was used for the qualitative responses. Results showed that a great majority (68%) were favorable to the online asynchronous delivery of lessons and some (32%) students expressed disagreement. Those who were favorable believe that online distance learning allows them to work at their own pace (57%). Those who disagreed expressed dissatisfaction due to the lack of discussions. The online class practice was the number one factor (f=763) considered when they reflect on their learning experience satisfaction followed by content lesson (f-303), and lastly is the teacher character (f=121). Word cloud generator revealed the dominant keywords that describe the student's satisfaction with online class practices - videos, activities, fair grading, discussions, and complete modules. In content, the keywords include critical thinking, understanding, importance, awareness, issues, social, and economy. The teacher characteristics favored by the students were considerate, approachable, communicative, knowledgeable, and competent. Meanwhile, the major reasons for dissatisfaction include many readings, many activities, lack of instructions, lack of interactions, and difficulty. This study showed the positive aspects of online distance learning. However, the lack of proper guidance and insightful discussions from the professors makes the online tasks difficult leaving the students thirsty for academic socialization.

ABSTRACT

During the height of the pandemic, the most vulnerable individuals are young adults aged 15 to 29 years old, according to World Health Organization (2020). Thus, emerging adults must be resilient in this time of adversity. Previous studies are limited in their ability to examine the full range of emotions and their behavioral impact throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To address the gap in the literature, this paper offers to look into the mediation effect of hope between positive emotion and resilience. Specifically, this paper identified the level of positive emotions, hope, and resilience among emerging adults. This paper also examined the correlation among the said variables. Furthermore, the current study examined the mediating role of hope between positive emotion and resilience. Participants were 379 emerging adults living within Nueva Ecija, ranging from 18 to 25 years old. Findings suggest while the pandemic may have significantly impacted various aspects of emerging adults' lives, such as their social relationships and academic pursuits, it did not necessarily lead to extreme emotional states. However, results showed that emerging adults had experienced a low level of resilience, although results showed that they are hopeful. Furthermore, the study also found that positive emotion significantly correlates with resilience. Hope and resilience are significantly correlated. There is also a positive correlation between positive emotion and hope. Thus, mediation analysis suggests that hope is a mechanism that helps explain how positive emotions can promote resilience.

This paper analyzes the articles published in The Plowman, which is the official student organ of the Central Luzon Agricultural School (1907), now Central Luzon State University (1960). The purpose of this study is to determine the narratives of Filipino students on their experiences and views on the historical context of 1945, which is the end of the Japanese occupation. Data coding was used to collect and analyze data in relation to the extent of coverage and content of 30 articles in the organ. Analysis of the articles shows that hope is the common theme for all the articles. Hopes were expressed through narratives of capture and escape from Japanese soldiers, revitalization of arts in the campus, rebuilding peace and order, and creating institutional changes for education. This study reexplores the life of students during and aftermath of the Japanese Occupation and the period of American influence in the school, which is important to understand the colonial history and how this affected the socioeconomic lives of the people as well as the local politics that evolved.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the perceptions of Filipino senior high school students on the use of ChatGPT and other AI technologies in composition writing classes. Specifically, this study aims to identify the advantages and disadvantages of using ChatGPT and other AI technologies in writing classes, as well as to determine the level of acceptance of these tools among senior high school students. To achieve this goal, a descriptive qualitative research approach was employed, which involved conducting interviews with senior high school students in a private university in Manila, Philippines. The participants were asked about their experience using ChatGPT and other AI tools in writing classes, their perceptions of the usefulness of these tools, and their preferences in terms of teaching and learning writing skills. The findings of the study suggest that students have positive attitudes toward the use of ChatGPT and other AI technologies in writing classes. They perceive these tools as helpful in enhancing their writing skills, making the writing process more efficient, and improving the quality of their written outputs. However, some concerns were also raised regarding the potential limitations of these tools, such as the possibility of reducing creativity and critical thinking skills. Overall, this exploratory study provides valuable insights into the perceptions of senior high school students on the use of ChatGPT and other AI technologies in writing classes, which can inform future development and integration of AI tools in the educational setting.

ABSTRACT

Course on ethics has been included in the academic curriculum in some universities. However, the transition of Philippine education to the K – 12 Basic Education Curriculum in 2019, paved the way for the integration of the subject ethics in General Education (G.E.) courses. The course aims to promote critical ethical thinking in students in responding to moral issues that require cogent and inclusive moral deliberation. The paper seeks to present students’ feedback on the subject. Qualitative study approach, particularly semi–structured survey among 345 CLSU students enrolled in the subject during the online mode of learning was done. The survey questionnaire focuses on the four major themes as regards the overall assessment of the students on the delivery of the course. These include students' satisfaction with the course that should be retained, students' dissatisfaction with the course which needs to be revised, students' satisfying experiences on the course, and student’s preferred mode of learning on the course. Results show that the satisfaction of the students on the course is primarily a teacher factor, nonetheless, a need to revisit the content of the course is necessary hence, the reading articles were highly philosophical. Thus, a rebranding of ethics is essential to effectively deliver and transmit the learning pedagogy.
